As a wedding photographer, I've had the privilege of working with countless couples, and I've seen firsthand what works and what doesn't when it comes to making sure your big day goes smoothly—and that your photos turn out just the way you’ve always dreamed.

So, I’ve gathered some of the best practical advice directly from the brides I’ve worked with. Here are their top tips for ensuring everything runs smoothly and that you have amazing photos to look back on.

Plan for the Unexpected

"Things will go wrong—and that’s okay. The key is to roll with it and focus on what truly matters. If it rains, have a backup plan. If a vendor is late, don’t stress. In the end, you're marrying the love of your life, and that's the most important thing." – Sarah

As a photographer, I can’t stress this enough—sometimes, the best moments happen when things don’t go according to plan. So, try not to sweat the small stuff! Some of the most memorable and beautiful wedding photos come from unexpected moments, whether it’s a sudden rainstorm or an impromptu dance party.

Schedule Extra Time for Getting Ready

"I wish we had built in more time for getting ready photos. I felt rushed, and I wish I’d had more time to enjoy the morning with my bridesmaids." – Maria

When you’re booking your photographer, be sure to allow extra time for those getting-ready shots. The laughter, the details, the little moments with your bridal party—those can be some of the most intimate and meaningful photos of the day. Trust me, it’s worth it to give yourself enough time so you’re not feeling rushed.

Focus on the Moments, Not Just the Poses

"Some of my favorite wedding photos are the candid shots where we were just laughing or sharing a private moment. Don’t get too hung up on the posed pictures—those moments are what you’ll want to remember." – Katie

As a photographer, I agree—authentic moments are what make a wedding album truly personal. While it’s important to have those family portraits and carefully posed shots, some of the best images are the ones that capture you and your partner in a moment of joy or love, without worrying about perfection.

Communicate with Your Photographer

“Let your photographer know what’s important to you. If you want a lot of candid shots, or if there are specific people or details you want to make sure are captured, say it! You don’t want to miss something you care about.” – Chloe

Your photographer is there to help tell your story. Be open with them about what’s most important to you. Whether it’s a specific location, a family member you want to make sure is in the photos, or a certain vibe you want captured, clear communication can help make sure your photos are exactly what you envision.

Don’t expect it be perfect. GO WITH THE FLOW.

Life happens. Weather happens. Think about it. When you have a million different moving parts coming together for one event – not everything will happen perfectly. And that’s practically science. Go with the flow is great advice because at the end of the day… will you be able to control things you can’t change? Nope!
